The three state pensioner payments hitting bank accounts from October
Pensioners will benefit from several cash boosts over the coming months.

State pensioners across the UK are set to benefit from three winter payments that will hit bank accounts from October.
The payments come from three separate winter schemes including the Winter Fuel Payment, the Warm Home Discount Scheme and a one-off Christmas bonus, all of which should be paid out to those eligible before the end of the year. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will begin issuing letters to state pensioners in October to confirm Winter Fuel Payment amounts, with the payments then due to follow in November and December.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme gets underway a little earlier with the scheme due to reopen in October. Those eligible will receive a £150 discount off their electricity bill, which will be applied by their energy supplier by March 31, 2027.
As for the Christmas Bonus, the DWP usually pays this in the first full week in December and it is available to people of State Pension age.
Of course, as is the case with all government schemes, state pensioners will need to meet strict eligibility criteria to qualify for the support, but with three winter payments up for grabs, those eligible for all of them could get up to £360.
Listed are the three winter payments that will be available to state pensioners from October and how much you could get.
Winter Fuel Payment – £300
State pensioners born on or before June 27, 1960, who live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland can get a Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP.
The amount you get is determined by your age and your circumstances during the qualifying week between September 21 to 27, 2026, but payments are worth between £100 and £300.
The DWP eligibility criteria states that pensioners who live alone and were born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960, will get £200, while those who live alone and were born before September 28, 1946 will get £300.
If you live with someone else who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment your payment may be different and will range between £100 and £300.
The DWP will send out letters from October telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get if you’re eligible.
Warm Home Discount – £150
The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides a £150 discount off electricity bills and the scheme reopens in October.
In England and Wales, households in receipt of Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit and Universal Credit will be eligible – the same cohort as last winter.
The discount is also available to households in Scotland but the qualifying criteria is slightly different. You’ll get it if you or your partner:
get Pension Credit
get an extra amount of Universal Credit because you or your child has a disability or health condition
get a disability premium or a pensioner premium of income-related Employment Support Allowance
get a disability premium or a pensioner premium and have a Support for Mortgage Interest loan.
The discount is applied to bills by energy suppliers taking part in the scheme rather than straight into your bank account, and you’ll get it automatically from October if you’re eligible.
Christmas Bonus – £10
The Christmas Bonus is a one-off tax free payment made in December to people claiming certain benefits, including several pension-age benefits like the State Pension, Pension Credit, Pension Age Disability Payment and Attendance Allowance.
To be eligible for the £10 bonus, you must be getting at least one of the qualifying benefits in the ‘qualifying week’, which is normally the first full week of December.
If eligible, you don’t need to claim the bonus as this should be paid to you automatically and will show up as ‘DWP XB’ on your bank statement.
